Now that summer seems to be officially here I can't help but think of going canoeing. Although, I doubt I will make it out on the Churchill this summer, I have been thinking a lot about the great times I have had canoeing out to Nistowiak Falls in northern Saskatchewan.
The trip out to Nistowiak Falls is a very relaxing and trip that can easily be done in a long weekend. The falls themselves are probably the most well known water fall in Saskatchewan. The falls are a 10 metre drop and really need to be seen. The photo taken here of the falls is already two years old. The falls themselves are a short hike up from a fishing camp (Jim's Fishing Camp I think, but I could be wrong). If you are canoeing in please be respectful of the people at the camp. A short hike past the falls there is also a great little swimming hole to cool off in.
Some of the other highlights of the trip to Nistowiak Falls, can include a stop at Stanley Mission Anglican Church. The oldest building in Saskatchewan. The church is across the river from Stanley Mission. There is also some Aboriginal Rock Paintings to take in on the rocks between Stanley Mission and Stanley rapids. Of course there is always the opportunity to play in little Stanley rapids. I would not advise playing in big Stanley rapids, it can be quite dangerous.
If you do get the chance to canoe to Nistowiak Falls, take a moment to register at the tourist booth in La Ronge. By registering you can get a Voyageur certificate. It is a great little memento of your trip. Hope you enjoy your canoe trip, and if I am lucky I might see you out there.
